AAUW-San Francisco History and Mission
The San Francisco Branch of AAUW is the second oldest branch in the United States, organized in 1886 as the Pacific Organization of Collegiate Alumnae. It later became the California Branch of the Association of Collegiate Alumnae and then the San Francisco Bay Branch of AAUW. The Branch was and still is a pioneer in expanding women’s roles in California education.
The mission of AAUW is to advance gender equity for women and girls through research, education, and advocacy. AAUW-San Francisco is committed to supporting the AAUW mission in San Francisco by increasing opportunities for women and girls, initiating collaborations and mentorships, and providing leadership for community impact.
Organization Profile
AAUW promotes equity for all women and girls, lifelong education and positive societal change. AAUW, founded in 1881, is open to all graduates with an associate degree or the equivalent from educational institutions that offer recognized associate, baccalaureate, or higher degrees. In principle and practice AAUW values and seeks a diverse membership. There shall be no barriers to full participation in this organization on the basis of gender, race, creed, age, sexual orientation, national origin, disability or class.
